Description
Saffron is a spice derived from the stamens of the flower Crocus Sativus. The flower blooms for only one week a year, and each individual flower produces three stamens. These are then picked by hand and dried. All in all, it's a long and laborious process- about 150 flowers are required for 1g of Saffron!
Gamila at Beechworth's Saffron is grown on a sunny, north facing slope just outside of the town of Beechworth in the Victorian high country. After picking in Autumn, it's aged for 6 months and then processed into high quality saffron extract. As the key flavours, aromas and colour of Saffron can degrade quickly, saffron extract is a simple solution to ensure that the wonders of saffron can be enjoyed at any time. Simply add a few drops to rice or pasta dishes, cocktails, eggs - or infuse into oil for a vibrant saffron experience!
